Antiphon. Remember not, *Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our forefathers : neither take thou vengeance of our sins.

And this Antiphon is said in full upon double feasts: and in Eastertide is added Alleluia.

Ps. 84. QUAM DILECTA.

Ohow amiable are thy dwellings, * thou Lord of hosts !

My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord : * my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young : even thy altars, 0 Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house ; * they will be alway praising thee

Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee, * in whose heart are thy ways,

Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well,* and the pools are filled with water:

They will go from strength to strength ; * and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion.

0 Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer : * hearken, 0 God of Jacob.

Behold, 0 God, our de fender : * and look upon the face of thine Anointed : For one day in thy courts is better than a thou sand.

1 had rather be a door keeper in the house of my God, * than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness.

For the Lord God is a light and defence ; * the Lord will give grace and worship, and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly life.

Comfort the soul of thy servant, * for unto thee, 0 Lord, do I lift up my soul.

For thou, Lord, art good and gracious : * and of great mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

Give ear, Lord, unto my prayer : * and ponder the voice of my humble desires.

In the time of my trouble I will call upon thee : * for thou hearest me.

Among the gods there is none like unto thee, 0 Lord:

* there is not one that can do as thou doest.

All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship thee, 0 Lord, * and shall glorify thy Name.

For thou art great and doest wondrous things : * thou art God alone.

Teach me thy way, 0 Lord, that I may walk in thy truth : * 0 knit my heart unto thee, that I may fear thy Name.

I will thank thee, 0 Lord my God, with all my heart,

toward me : * and thou hast delivered my soul from the nethermost hell.

0 God, the proud are risen against me, * and the congregations of naughty men have sought after my soul, and have not set thee before their eyes.

But thou, 0 Lord God, art full of compassion and mercy, * long - suffering, plenteous in goodness and truth.

0 turn thee then unto me, and have mercy upon me, * give thy strength unto thy servant, and help the son of thine handmaid.

Shew some token upon me for good, that they who hate me may see it, and be ashamed : * because thou, Lord, hast holpen me and comforted me.

Glory be to the Father.

Ps. 116, v. 10. CREDIDI.

I believed, and therefore will I speak ; but I was sore troubled ; * I said in my haste : All men are liars. What reward shall I give

unto the Lord * for all the benefits that he hath done unto me?

I will receive the cup ol salvation : * and call upon the Name of the Lord.

I will pay my vows now in the presence of all his people : * right dear in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

Behold, 0 Lord, how that I am thy servant, * I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid. Thou hast broken my bonds in sunder ;

I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the Name of the Lord,

I will pay my vows unto the Lord in the sight of all his people : * in the courts of the Lord's house, even in the midst of thee, 0 Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

Glory be to the Father.

Ps. 130. DE PROFUNDIS.

Out of the deep have I called unto thee, 0 Lord: * Lord, hear my voice.

Preparation for Mass

0 let thine ears consider well * the voice of my com plaint.

If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss : * 0 Lord, who may abide it ?

For there is mercy with thee : * therefore shalt thou be feared.

1 look for the Lord ; my soul doth wait for him ; * in his word is my trust ;

My soul fleeth unto the Lord * before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch.

O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy, * and with him is plenteous redemption.

And he shall redeem Israel * from all his sins.

BEFORE MASS

PRAYER OF ST. AMBROSE.

OMOST loving Lord Jesu Christ, I a sin ner, trusting not in my own righteousness but in thy goodness and mercy, draw near to the table of thy most comfortable feast, in fear and trembling. My heart and body are defiled by many sins ; my mind and tongue have not been guarded from evil. There fore, 0 God of love, awful in thy majesty, in the straits of my misery I fly unto thee, the fountain of all mercy, I hasten unto thee for healing, I flee to thy pro tection : and since I may not stand before thy judg ment, I yearn to have thee for my Saviour. In thy sight, 0 Lord, I lay bare my bruises and uncover my

shame. I know my sins to be many and grievous, and therefore I am afraid: I put my trust in thy mercies, for the sum of them cannot be numbered. Look upon me, therefore, 0 Lord Jesu Christ, King eternal, God and man, crucified for man, with the eyes of thy mercy. Hearken unto me ; for I put my trust in thee : have mercy upon me, who am full of misery and sin, 0 thou unfailing fountain of mercy. Hail, saving Vic tim, offered for me and all mankind upon the shameful Cross. Hail, 0 noble and precious Blood, flowing from the wounds of Jesus Christ, my Lord, crucified for me, to wash away the sins of the whole world. Remember, 0 Lord, thy creature, whom thou hast redeemed with thy Blood. I repent me of my

sins, I desire to amend what I have done amiss. I beseech thee, therefore, most merciful Father, take away from me all my sins and iniquities ; that being puri fied both in body and soul, I may worthily receive these most holy mysteries : and grant that as now in my unworthiness I purpose to be a partaker of thy Body and Blood, so I may thereby obtain remission of my sins, and full delivery from my guilt : that all evil thoughts may be banished from me, and all good affections be born again within me : that all such works as are pleas ing to thee may effectually be accomplished in me, to my protection both in body and soul against all the assaults of my enemies.

PRAYER OF ST. THOMAS AQUINAS.

A'JMIGHTY and ever lasting God, behold I draw near to the Sacrament of thy only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. I draw near, sick to the Physician of life, foul to

the fountain of mercy, blind to the light of eternal glory, poor and needy to the Lord of heaven and earth. I im plore thee, therefore, that of the abundance of thine infinite mercy thou wouldest vouchsafe to heal my sick ness, to wash my foulness, to enlighten my blindness, to enrich my poverty, to clothe my nakedness : that so I may receive him, who is the bread of Angels, King of kings and Lord of lords, with all the reverence and humility, all the contrition and devotion, all the purity and faith, and that due pur pose and intention that shall be profitable for the salva tion of my soul. Grant, I pray thee, that I may not only receive the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Lord, but also the effect and operation of the same. Most gracious God, grant that I may so receive the Body of thy only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, taken by him of the Virgin Mary, that I may be made incorporate in his mystical Body and numbered among his members. Vouchsafe,

Tf On week-days in Advent, when Mass is said of a semi-double Feast, the second Collect is of Advent, and the third of St. Mary. But if Mass be said of a double Feast, after the Collect of the Feast is said that of Advent only. Of simple Feasts occurring in Advent a Commemoration only is made.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Rom. 13. 8.

BRETHREN: Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this: Thou shalt not

commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet : and if there be any other command ment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely : Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of dark ness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

GRADUAL. Ps. 25. For all they that look for thee shall not be ashamed, O Lord. y. Make known to me thy ways, O Lord: and teach me thy paths.

All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying : Tell ye the daughter of Sion : Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying: Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying : Who is this ? And the multitude said: This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, and said unto them: It is written: My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. Rom. 15. 4.

BRETHREN: Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning : that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one towards another according to Christ Jesus : that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore re ceive ye one, another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy ; as it is written : For this cause I will con fess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy Name. And again he saith: Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again : Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles : and laud him, all ye people. And again : Esaias saith: There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing: that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

AT that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth dis tress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemp tion draweth nigh. And he spake to them a parable: Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; when they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you : This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition ; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things ? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be re vealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; as it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying: The voice of one crying in the wilderness : Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. And they asked him, What then ? Art thou Elias ? And he saith: I am not. Art thou that prophet ? And he answered: No. Then said they unto him : Who art thou ? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself ? He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness : Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him,

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; because he was of the house and lineage of David; to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger ; because there was no room for them in the inn. The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. Heb. i. i.

GOD, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets : hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds : who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high ; being made so much better than the Angels, -as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the Angels said he at any time: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee ? And again : I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son ? And again, when he bringeth in the first-begotten into the world, he saith: And let all the Angels of God worship him. And of the Angels he saith: Who maketh his Angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith : Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever ; a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom: thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity: therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And: Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth ; and the heavens are the works of thine hands : they shall perish, but thou remainest : and they all shall wax old as doth a garment : and as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed ; but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

^ The Beginning of the HOLY GOSPEL accord ing to John. St. John i. i.

IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him ; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (Here genuflect.) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. The Creed is said.

have handled of the word of life ; (for the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us ; ) that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you: That God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

IN those days: I looked, and lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's Name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps : and they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders; and no man could learn that song, but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These are they which were not defiled with women, for they are virgins : these are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth: these were redeemed from among men, being the first- fruits unto God, and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile; for they are without fault before the throne of God.

But while he thought on these things, behold, the Angel of the Lord, appeared

T^RETHREN: Blessed is the man to whom the J3 Lord will not impute sin. Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also ? For we say, that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. How was it then reckoned ? when he was in cir cumcision, or in uncircumcision ? And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised : that he might be the father of all them that believe,

though they be not circumcised: that righteous ness might be imputed unto them also: and the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. GOD, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles: mercifully grant, that we, which know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead. Through the same.

The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Ephes. 3. i.

T)RETHREN: For this cause, I Paul, the J3 prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles; if ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God, which is given me to you-ward, how that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery, (as I wrote afore in few words, whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ, which in other ages was not

made known unto the sons of men) as it is now revealed unto his holy Apostles and Prophets by the Spirit; that the Gentiles should be fellow- heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ, by the Gospel: whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; and to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. To the intent, that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the Church the manifold wisdom of God, according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: in whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

GRADUAL. Is. 60. All they from Saba shall come, bringing gold and incense, and shall shew forth the praises of the Lord. y. Arise and shine, O Jerusalem: for the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

Alleluia, alleluia, y. St. Matt. 2. We have seen his star in the East, and are come with offerings to worship the Lord. Alleluia.

WHEN Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king: behold, there came wise men from the east to

Jerusalem, saying: Where is he that is born King of the Jews ? For we have seen his star in the east: and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things: he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them, where Christ should be born. And they said unto him: In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet: And thou, Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said: Go, and search diligently for the young child: and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed: and lo, the star which they saw in the east went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother (here genuflect), and fell down and wor shipped him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod: they departed into their own country another way. <

The Creed is said.

NOW the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when Jesus was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem, after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey: and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jeru salem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him: Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us ? Behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them: How is if that ye sought me ? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business ? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And

Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power ? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same. For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he beareth not the sword in vain. For he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
